American Psychiatric Association

American professional association of psychiatrists with its head office in Washington, founded in 1844 and the oldest medical association in the country. Publishes the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders used worldwide for diagnosis and in drug trials, issues practice guidelines on the use of psychiatric medicines, runs the American Journal of Psychiatry and a publishing arm, holds a large annual meeting and represents the specialty on policy.
