Brazilian public health research foundation in Manguinhos, Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1900 by Oswaldo Cruz and now the main science and technology institution for health in Latin America, under the Ministry of Health. Carries out research in infectious disease, immunology, genomics and public health through institutes including the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, runs the Bio-Manguinhos vaccine and diagnostic producer and Farmanguinhos, the country's largest public medicine factory, operates hospitals and reference laboratories and teaches postgraduate programmes in public health and biomedical science.
