German public university at Mainz in Rhineland-Palatinate, refounded in 1946 on a university first opened in 1477 and named after the printer Johannes Gutenberg. Teaches pharmacy through its institute of pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, together with medicine, chemistry, biology and physics, runs the Mainz university medical centre for clinical teaching and trials, and carries out research on medicinal chemistry, drug delivery, polymer science and immunotherapy with neighbouring institutes and companies.
