American not for profit academic medical centre with its main campus at Rochester in Minnesota, founded by the Mayo family and the Sisters of Saint Francis in the late nineteenth century and one of the best known hospitals in the world, with further campuses in Arizona and Florida and a health system across the upper midwest. Provides highly specialised care across the specialties with cancer treatment, cardiac surgery, neurology and neurosurgery and transplantation, runs its own reference laboratories through Mayo Clinic Laboratories, imaging services and pharmacy, and carries out biomedical research, clinical trials and medical education through the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
