American federal research institute at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, one of the institutes of the National Institutes of Health, established in 1966 to study how the environment affects human health. Runs its own laboratories in toxicology, epidemiology, genetics and reproductive and developmental biology, hosts the National Toxicology Program which tests and evaluates chemicals and publishes the Report on Carcinogens, funds environmental health research and training across the country, and publishes Environmental Health Perspectives.
