Indian institute of national importance in Bengaluru, Karnataka, formed in 1974 by merging the Mysore Government Mental Hospital, whose origins date to 1847, with the All India Institute of Mental Health, and the country's leading centre for mental health and neurosciences. Provides psychiatric, neurological and neurosurgical care with addiction medicine and child and adolescent psychiatry, teaches postgraduate and doctoral programmes in psychiatry, neurology, neurosurgery, clinical psychology, neurochemistry and neuropharmacology, and runs clinical trials, a clinical pharmacology unit and a drug de-addiction centre.
