American non profit research institute at Birmingham in Alabama, founded in 1941 and affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, which now trades simply as Southern Research. Carries out drug discovery and development in cancer and infectious disease, with medicinal chemistry, virology and preclinical testing groups that have contributed to several approved anticancer medicines, and also runs engineering, energy and environmental research and government contract work.
