German welfare association with its federal office in Berlin, founded in 1919 as the Arbeiterwohlfahrt and one of the country's six large welfare organisations. Runs and represents care homes, outpatient nursing services, hospitals and rehabilitation clinics, kindergartens and social counselling through its regional associations, employs and trains care staff and speaks for its members on health and social policy.
