American public health system of Cook County in Illinois, one of the largest in the country, whose John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Chicago succeeded the Cook County Hospital founded in the eighteen thirties. Runs Stroger Hospital and Provident Hospital with community health centres, the county department of public health, the correctional health service at the county jail and the CountyCare health plan, and provides emergency and trauma care, toxicology and a well known medical toxicology service, clinical laboratories and residency training.
