American pharmaceutical company with its head office in Indianapolis, Indiana, founded in 1876 by the chemist and army colonel Eli Lilly and listed in New York, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Known for the first commercial insulin in 1923 and now for diabetes and obesity medicines including tirzepatide, together with treatments in oncology, immunology and neuroscience including donanemab for Alzheimer's disease, and it runs research centres, clinical development and manufacturing plants in the United States and abroad.
