American pharmaceutical company founded in 1888 and based at Skokie in Illinois, bought by Monsanto in 1985, brought into Pharmacia Corporation in 2000 and into Pfizer in 2003. Made and sold prescription medicines including the first oral contraceptive Enovid, the antihypertensive and cardiovascular products of its later years, the arthritis medicine celecoxib and the sweetener aspartame, and ran its own research laboratories and manufacturing in the United States.
