British public research university in South Kensington, London, established in 1907 from the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines and the City and Guilds College and specialising in science, engineering, medicine and business. Its Faculty of Medicine, formed with St Mary's, Charing Cross and Westminster and the National Heart and Lung Institute, teaches medicine and biomedical science and works with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust on clinical trials, while its Department of Chemistry and the Institute of Chemical Biology run drug discovery, medicinal chemistry and chemical biology research.
