American public research university at Athens in south east Ohio, chartered in 1804 and the oldest university in the state. Runs the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, a College of Health Sciences and Professions with nursing, food and nutrition and health administration, departments of chemistry and biochemistry and biological sciences and the Russ College of Engineering with biomedical engineering, and carries out research in molecular and cellular biology, diabetes and growth hormone through the Edison Biotechnology Institute and translational biomedical science with its own laboratories.
