Sri Lankan public university in Colombo, whose origins go back to the Ceylon Medical College of 1870 and the Ceylon University College of 1921 and which became a separate university in 1978, the oldest university institution in the country. Teaches through its Faculty of Medicine with the National Hospital and its own molecular medicine unit, the Faculty of Science with chemistry, molecular biology and biotechnology, the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and faculties of nursing and technology, and carries out research in medicinal chemistry, natural products, infectious disease and clinical trials.
