Swedish Karolinska Institute researchers analyzed national health‑registry data from Sweden, Denmark and Norway to assess the link between SGLT2 inhibitor therapy and ketoacidosis in type‑2 diabetes patients. The study included more than 280,000 individuals treated with SGLT2 inhibitors.
The analysis showed that patients who have elevated blood glucose levels, low body weight, or a history of ketoacidosis are at a relatively higher risk of experiencing serious adverse events while on SGLT2 inhibitors. The risk further increases during episodes of infection or other acute illnesses.
These findings highlight the importance of careful patient selection and monitoring when prescribing SGLT2 inhibitors, particularly for those with the identified risk factors.
