Biografie

Throughout my research carrier, I have been trained in outstanding academic and research environments in France, USA, Singapore and Turkey. This led me to gain a high degree of expertise and a broad scientific knowledge in various research fields, including Mendelian genetic diseases, neuroscience, skin development, muscular system, ageing and cancer. Over the past decade, I have been using insights from patient-based genetic studies on rare genetic disorders to decipher the underlying cellular pathways and mechanisms with the ultimate aim of discovering novel therapeutic approaches. I had the opportunity to lead my own team and supervise a number of research officers, undergraduate, master and PhD students and post-doc. In 2020, I have been awarded by TÜBİTAK with the 2232-International Fellowship for Outstanding Experienced Researcher for a project entitled “From Mendelian diseases to functional genomics for therapeutic innovation" and decided to relocate to KOC University Medical School (Istanbul, Turkey), the ideal environment to work tightly with clinician expert in rare diseases. I currently hold an assistant professor position at Koç University Medical School (KUSOM) in the Department of Medical Genetics directed by Prof. Hulya Kayserili. Among other roles, I am in charge of expanding the department translational research capabilities to carry-out in vitro functional studies aiming at linking specific phenotypes to disease-causing genes and identifying potential drug targets and diagnostic biomarkers to move forward and alleviate patient’s symptoms. Meanwhile, I participate to set-up an in vivo functional validation program with our newly established zebrafish husbandry at KUTTAM and opened two new courses in KUSOM for graduate students related to in vitro functional validation and in vivo modelling of rare genetic diseases for developing novel treatment options. My research group is currently composed of 6 people, all supported by research fellowships from my TÜBİTAK funding. Since September 2020, I have settled the laboratory with all the necessary equipment and trained the team in various molecular, biochemistry, imaging techniques on human primary cells and zebrafish animal models. I have been a part-time senior scientist with A*STAR, Singapore from 2020-2023 to continue to manage remotely several research projects. Moreover, I encourage my students to get trained abroad. One of them has been recently awarded with the Singapore International Pre-Graduate Award (SIPGA) in Singapore for a short-term research attachment on zebrafish modeling. Our latest research project focus on understanding molecular alterations causing novel muscular dystrophy and ALS like syndrome
