Professor Fernando Martin-Sanchez PhD, FACHI, FACMI, FIAHSI, is the Deputy General Manager for Medical Informatics, Digital Strategy and Innovation at the University Hopital "La Paz", in Madrid, Spain (ISCIII). He also leads LIMA (Laboratory for Advanced Medical Informatics) a research group at IDIPAZ (accredited La Paz Health Research Institute)
From 2018 to 2023 he was a Research Professor in Biomedical Informatics at the National School of Public Health of Spain, and Coordinated the Digital Health Program of the National Institute of Health "Carlos III".
From 2015 to 2017 he was Full Professor at the Division of Health Informatics at Weill Cornell Medicine and participated in the US Precision Medicine Initiative (AllofUs).
Prior to this (2011-2015), he was the Chair of Health Informatics at the Melbourne Medical School and foundational Director of the Health and Biomedical Informatics Centre (HaBIC) at the University of Melbourne.
He holds PhDs in Informatics and Medicine; an MSc in Knowledge Engineering and a BSc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He has worked in the Joint Program in Biomedical Engineering between Emory University Hospital and Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta USA, and in the National Institute of Health Carlos III in Madrid, Spain, where he was the CIO and then Founding Director of the Medical Bioinformatics Research Group.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and the Australasian College of Health Informatics (ACHI). He has served as a Vice-President of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) and is an inaugural Fellow and was a member of the Board of the International Academy for Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI). He was (2015-2020) an Honorary Professorial Fellow (Melbourne’s Medical School).
With more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, his research has been funded by more than 40 grants from the European Commission, and main agencies from Spain, Australia and the USA. His research interests include informatics methods and systems in exposomics, precision medicine and participatory digital health.
