A. Personal Statement
I am a medicinal chemist with broad and extensive experience in drug discovery, particularly for neurological conditions. I have 34 years of experience as a medicinal chemist for Pfizer Global Research and Development, where I was actively involved in process chemistry, immunology, infectious disease, diabetes, neuroscience, natural product isolation, and developing new technologies for drug discovery. I have over 100 patents and publications and have given numerous scientific presentations. I am recognized widely for my experience and knowledge of drug discovery over all and pharmaceutical chemistry specifically.
While in the neuroscience group from 1987 to 2009, my laboratory discovered a series of nNOS inhibitors for treatment of stroke, as well as novel glutamate antagonists, novel p-type calcium channel antagonists from venoms, novel neurotransmitter release enhancers, 5HT2A/SRI agents for the treatment of depression, and AMPA modulators for cognitive function improvement. My laboratory also prepared Englitazone, a PPAR gamma agonist for the treatment of diabetes, and Sulopenem, a potent broad spectrum penem antibacterial.
In addition, I co-developed a systems-based approach, which is the first of its kind that enables multifactorial analysis of chemical and biological data for complex biological systems. This technology translates broad and heterogeneous preclinical and clinical information embedded in millions of study points into standardized information spectra to tackle otherwise intractable problems facing drug discovery scientists.
I am currently Founder and CSO of BioPharmaWorks (BPW), which is currently working with ~35 biotech and pharmaceutical companies to enhance or lead particular drug discovery and development programs. In addition, BPW has drug discovery programs of its own to provide prodrug solutions to medical problems. I have led a chemistry effort at Cadent Therapeutics (formerly Mnemosyne Pharma & Luc Therapeutics), which is centered on discovery of allosteric modulators of subtypes of the NMDA receptor. Novartis licensed a compound from this work that is current completing Phase II trials. Another compound from these efforts is starting a Phase 1 trial for treatment of Schizophrenia. I currently lead chemistry discovery efforts at five other companies.
I have enjoyed productive collaborations with many outstanding scientists, and I look forward to contributing to future projects

C. Contributions to Science
1. Pfizer Drug Discovery. The work of my neuroscience group at Pfizer resulted in a series of nNOS inhibitors for treatment of stroke. We also generated novel glutamate antagonists, p-type calcium channel antagonists from venoms, neurotransmitter release enhancers, 5HT2A/SRI agents for the treatment of depression, and modulators of AMPA (α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid) to treat cognitive function impairment. Other work included development of Englitazone, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR) agonist for treatment of diabetes, and
