Syrian public university in Damascus, the country's oldest and largest, formally founded in 1923 from the medical and law institutes opened in the preceding two decades. Its Faculty of Pharmacy is among the oldest in the Arab world and teaches the pharmacy degree together with postgraduate programmes in pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmacology and pharmaceutical analysis, and the university also runs faculties of medicine, dentistry, science and engineering with teaching hospitals in the capital.
