American biotechnology company at Cambridge in Massachusetts, founded in 1981 and bought by Sanofi in 2011, which pioneered enzyme replacement treatments for rare inherited disorders. Makes medicines for Gaucher, Fabry and Pompe disease and for multiple sclerosis, runs biological manufacturing plants in the United States and Europe and forms the basis of Sanofi's specialty care and rare disease business.
