Portuguese public university hospital in Porto, opened in 1959 and the largest hospital in the north of the country, the teaching hospital of the Porto medical faculty and now run as a local health unit with the area's primary care centres. Provides emergency and intensive care, transplantation, cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, neurosciences, oncology, obstetrics and paediatrics, and runs its own hospital pharmacy, clinical and pharmacology laboratories and a large clinical trials and research unit.
