American private research university in Houston, Texas, founded in 1912 with a bequest from William Marsh Rice and adjacent to the Texas Medical Center. Runs departments of bioengineering, chemistry, biosciences and chemical and biomolecular engineering with the Rice Synthetic Biology Institute and nanotechnology centres, and conducts research in drug delivery, biomaterials, synthetic biology, nanomedicine and medical device engineering in collaboration with the Texas Medical Center hospitals.
