A Japanese research team followed 7,644 healthy women for an average of 13.7 years. The cohort was monitored through annual health examinations at a Tokyo hospital between 2004 and 2024, generating 86,967 thyroid function tests before and after menopause. The analysis, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, found that thyroid function does not change abruptly around menopause. Instead, age‑related, gradual alterations in thyroid activity were more pronounced.
These findings suggest clinicians should consider the slow, progressive nature of thyroid changes when evaluating middle‑aged female patients, rather than attributing sudden shifts to the menopausal transition.
