Jeffry Weers is currently is an independent consultant. He is a physical chemist with a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Davis. The colloidal domain (1-1000 nm) is where physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and technology meet. Nowhere is this more important than in the field of drug delivery. Jeff's career has been dedicated to improving the diagnosis and treatment of diseases through innovative design of engineered particles and delivery systems. Jeff is an accomplished pharmaceutical professional with more than 35 years of experience in the design and development of novel drug delivery systems from initial concept through regulatory approval. He is an innovator with an extensive patent portfolio and publication record on novel formulations, treatments, and delivery technologies for the administration of small molecules, biologics, and combination products. He has a proven track record in assembling and leading multidisciplinary teams to drive innovation. Jeff has published nearly 100 peer reviewed articles (h-index = 58), has authored several book chapters, and spoken at many national and international meetings. He is a prolific inventor with 72 issued patents in the US and more than 300 patents worldwide. Jeff’s inventions have resulted in ten approved pharmaceutical products. Products advanced into development include a blood substitute (Oxygent™), an ultrasound contrast agent (Imagent®), a ventilation technique termed partial liquid ventilation (LiquiVent®), a hydrogel to prevent post-operative adhesions (FloGel®), and numerous patents related to engineered particles for inhalation (e.g., the PulmoSphere™ technology which is utilized in inhaled drug products including TOBI® Podhaler™, Bevespi® Aerosphere, Breztri® Aerosphere Symbicort® Aerosphere, Airsupra® and Ciprofloxacin DPI). Patents are also directed to aerosol delivery of antiinfectives utilizing combinations of liposome encapsulated and free drug (e.g., Arikayce®). Jeff has received numerous awards including the Charles G. Thiel Award from VCU (Respiratory Drug Delivery) , the Career Achievement Award from the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (ISAM) and the Alexander Fleming Serendipity Award from the London Business School. He is a Fellow of American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and ISAM, an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Drug Delivery and serves on the Editorial Board of the J Aerosol Med Pulm Drug Deliv.
