Biografía

Michael (Mike) DeVito, received his B.A. in chemistry from Drew University (Madison, NJ) in 1985 and a M.S. (1988) and Ph.D. (1992) in Toxicology from the Joint Graduate Program in Toxicology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. During his time at Rutgers, his research focused on the neurotoxicity of methamphetamine (M.S.) under the direction of Dr. George Wagner and the antiestrogenic effects of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (Ph.D.) under the direction of Dr. Michael Gallo. Mike then went on to a post doctoral fellowship at the USEPA at the National Health and Ecological Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL)(1991-1994) under the direction of Dr. Linda Birnbaum. His research focused on the toxicity of dioxins and evaluating the role of pharmacokinetics in the relative potency of this class of persistent organic pollutants. At this time Mike published a seminal paper comparing the body burden dioxins in animal toxicity studies to humans exposed to dioxins. This work indicated that the margin of exposure was less than a factor of 10 in the general population compared to the animal toxicity studies. This resulted in the use of body burden as a dose metric for dioxins and other persistent organic pollutants by regulatory agencies across the world. In 1995, Mike became a Principle Investigator at NHEERL and became one of the lead toxicologists for the Dioxin Reassessment effort at the USEPA. In 2002, Mike became chief of the Pharmacokinetics Branch at NHEERL where his research began employing Physiologically-Based Pharmacokinetic models for use in cumulative risk for dioxins, PCB’s, pyrethroid pesticides and thyroid hormone disruptors. In 2009, Mike joined the National Toxicology Program at NIEHS as the discipline lead for pharmacokinetic modeling and then became Chief of the NTP Laboratory (NTPL) (2014-2019). The laboratory serves as a core laboratory facility for the NTP and provides a resource for investigative toxicology projects that are assigned through the NIEHS leadership, branch chiefs, the Program Review Committee (PRC), or are developed within the laboratory. Durnig this time Mike’s research focused on the use of New Alternative Methods to evaluate the toxicity of data poor chemicals. In 2019, Mike became the Director of the Chemical Characterization and Exposure Division (CCED) at the Center for Computational Toxicology & Exposure within the USEPA. The CCED performs research to develop and advance experimental chemistry approaches that are critical to the rapid characterization of the presence, structural characteristics, and properties of chemicals that are of interest to EPA scientists due to their potential environmental fate and toxicity. In addition to chemical characterization, CCED develops computational models to predict external exposure and internal doses for large numbers of chemicals based on minimal data.
