Mr. Dorf is the Chief Software Architect at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research (BMIR). He has played the principal role in devising the architecture for the National Center for Biomedical Ontology (NCBO) and is the primary architect and developer of BioPortal (https://bioportal.bioontology.org/), a flagship ontology repository used by researchers, clinicians, and developers worldwide to access, search, and integrate biomedical ontologies. Mr. Dorf brings deep expertise in large-scale web application development, REST API design, distributed systems, and high-performance search platforms. He designed BioPortal's distributed linked-data infrastructure enabling scalable, cross-system ontology services, and built the search system that improved query performance by multiple orders of magnitude. The REST-based APIs he designed for BioPortal are widely adopted across research, academia, and industry. Mr. Dorf currently leads a comprehensive effort to modernize BioPortal's backend infrastructure, aligning it with the AgroPortal implementation maintained by OntoPortal Alliance partners at LIRMM. This work spans seven core repositories and introduces upgrades across the full technology stack, including multi-triplestore backend compatibility, a modular ontology processing pipeline, and modern authentication support. He has also led the integration of enhanced SKOS support, the FAIR-IMPACT Metadata for Ontology Description and Publication (MOD 2.0) vocabulary, and a new ontology administration and validation framework into BioPortal. These features were developed as part of the RADx Data Hub project, improving how the biomedical community discovers, evaluates, and manages ontologies. Mr. Dorf is an active contributor to the OntoPortal Alliance (https://ontoportal.org/), a global collaboration of ontology repository platform developers. He works closely with Alliance partners on upstream code alignment and feature development, and has presented at the OntoPortal Workshop in Berlin (2025). He has co-authored peer-reviewed publications on ontology management and the architectural design of BioPortal and the OntoPortal platforms. Mr. Dorf holds an M.S. in Software Engineering (Enterprise Software Technologies) from San Jose State University, a B.S. in Computer Science from San Francisco State University, and a B.A. in Political Science (Public Service) from the University of California, Davis.
