Resumen profesional

Dr. Katsumi Iga, Ph.D, JSSX Fellow, is a former professor at Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts (DWCLA) and currently serves as a Senior Advisor in the Pre-formulation Department of the Pharmaceutical Research and Technology Unit, R&D Division at Towa Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. His research interests encompass various areas, including the design of oral, buccal, rectal, transdermal, and parenteral dosage forms, with a focus on novel drug delivery systems such as liposomal tumor-targeted delivery and pulsatile delivery systems for peptides via iontophoresis transdermal systems. He is also involved in the evaluation of physicochemical properties of new chemical entities (NCEs), such as permeation and dissolution kinetics, as well as the application of the biopharmaceutical classification system. Furthermore, his expertise extends to pharmacokinetics, including the evaluation of the first pass effect, methods for avoiding the first pass effect, and the prediction of drug-drug interactions (DDIs). Dr. Iga has published 68 research papers, which can be accessed on his ResearchGate profile (www.researchgate.net/profile/Katsumi-Iga/research), and has filed 22 patent applications (https://patents.justia.com/inventor/katsumi-iga). He obtained his bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Tokyo in 1971, and subsequently acquired his Japanese Pharmacy license in the same year. Dr. Iga joined Takeda Chemical Ind Ltd, where he worked on formulations (dosage forms), drug delivery systems (DDSs), and pharmacokinetics for approximately 35 years. In 2005, he was appointed as a professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy at DWCLA, where he directed the pharmacokinetics laboratory and taught for nearly 13 years until his retirement. During his tenure at Takeda from 1971 to 2000, his research focused on the development and evaluation of dosage forms, including drug delivery systems (DDSs), leading to the creation of several innovative DDS technologies. In 1978, he spent a year studying at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Kentucky. In 1992, he obtained his doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Tokyo for his research on the optimum formulation of thermosensitive liposomes for targeted tumor drug delivery. In 2000, while still at Takeda, he transitioned to drug discovery teams to optimize NCEs using formulation technology and accelerate clinical trials. He served as the research manager and overall coordinator of clinical trials. During this period, he encountered various instances of abnormal pharmacokinetics in NCEs, such as an unusually large drug-drug interaction caused by the co-administration of ramelteon and fluvoxamine. After joining DWCLA, he dedicated his efforts to investigating the causes of such interactions and addressing the challenges associated with predicting DDIs. Dr. Iga successfully developed a user-friendly DDI prediction system accessible to researchers without the need for expensive commercial software. This system established a connection between the DDI under investigation and known DDIs. His research efforts have resulted in the publication of four research papers in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and a review in the Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin. He has been a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan since 1973, the Japan Society of Drug Delivery System from 1983 to 2019, the Japan Society for the Study of Xenobiotics (JSSX) from 2005 to 2019, and the Academy of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Japan from 2005 to 2019. In 2017, he was honored with the title of JSSX Fellow. Dr. Iga actively contributes to the field by conducting seminars, delivering lectures, and publishing articles to disseminate strategic approaches to pharmacokinetics among drug discovery researchers. He has also served as a peer reviewer for International Journal of Pharmaceutics and Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Following his retirement from DWCLA in 2018, he was invited to join Towa Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (2018–2025) as a Senior Adviser and later rejoined DWCLA (2025–present) as a Senior Researcher. In this role, he primarily educates researchers and provides expert guidance to address various challenges in pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics encountered during drug development.
