Resumen profesional

Miguel Campos obtained his BSc in Bioengineering in 2021 (14/20) from the Universidade Católica do Porto, Portugal. In 2023 he completed his MSc degree in Biomedical Engineering at Faculde de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto. His academic background included subjects related to cell culture, cell biology, chemistry and biomaterials. Also, during his academic career, he took classes related to various engineering-related subjects ranging from programming with various software, such as Matlab, C++, and PHP, to numerous physical-related classes, including fluid mechanics, biomechanical simulation, statistics and design of medical parts using SolidWorks. Moreover, the latter part of his studies included subjects, which introduced basic knowledge of economics, finance, and business modelling. His bachelor's final project included the development of a paper-based device to quickly calculate the concentration of calcium in saliva. Miguel’s MSc thesis was developed in the Department of Chemistry at Faculde de Engenharia de Universidade do Porto and at I3S. In his master's thesis, he combined new nanoparticles and anticancer drugs, developing a new pharmaceutical formulation capable of integrating photothermal therapy and chemotherapy. Afterwards, the biocompatibility towards normal skin cells, and photothermal and anticancer properties of the pharmaceutical formulations were tested. During his MSc thesis work, he developed proficiency in cell culture in sterile conditions, learned techniques related to the synthesis of nanomaterials and increased his knowledge of various characterization techniques of nanoparticles, as well as an increased interest in novel anticancer treatments and biomedicine. His work resulted in a paper publication entitled “New MoS2/Tegafur-Containing Pharmaceutical Formulations for Selective LED-Based Skin Cancer Photo-Chemotherapy” in Pharmaceutics journal (Q1, IF: 5.4, DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/pharmaceutics16030360). Also, other manuscript related to the work developed during the thesis is in preparation. Currently, Miguel is a Research Fellow working on a project (2022.04494.PTDC) focused on the production and characterization of nanoparticles for phototherapy of rectal cancer. At Professors' Artur Pinto, Fernão Magalhães, and Maria José Oliveira, LEPABE-FEUP/i3S Tumour and Microenvironment Group. His research line includes the production and characterization of nanomaterials, and phototherapy effects evaluation using in vitro assays. As mentioned above, Miguel is a 1st-author of a paper entitled “New MoS2/Tegafur-Containing Pharmaceutical Formulations for Selective LED-Based Skin Cancer Photo-Chemotherapy” in Pharmaceutics journal (Q1, IF: 5.4, DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/pharmaceutics16030360). His work has also been published in 3 posters at IJUP 2023, Ciência 2024 and at UT Austin Portugal Annual Conference 2023, the papers presented at the mentioned events are entitled “Pharmaceutical Formulations based on new 2D-nanomaterials for cancer phototherapy”, “Optimization of MoS2 nanosheets and Tegafur concentrations for skin cancer chemo/phototherapy” and “Optimization of molybdenum disulfide for cancer phototherapy and of a drug concentration for selective anti-cancer effect”, respectively.
