American biotechnology company in South San Francisco, California, founded in 1976 by Herbert Boyer and Robert Swanson and widely regarded as the first biotechnology company, wholly owned by Roche since 2009 while operating as an independent research and development centre. Developed the first recombinant human insulin and human growth hormone and markets biologics including trastuzumab, bevacizumab, rituximab, ocrelizumab and atezolizumab, with research in oncology, immunology, neuroscience, ophthalmology and infectious disease and its own biologics manufacturing.
