American public research university in Akron, Ohio, founded in 1870 as Buchtel College and long known for polymer science in the city that grew up around the rubber industry. Runs the School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering with work on biomaterials and drug delivery polymers, departments of chemistry and biology, biomedical engineering and chemical engineering and a College of Health and Human Sciences with nursing and nutrition, and carries out contract and sponsored research with industry through its own laboratories and research foundation.
