Since September 2019, Leslie has been the Lead Faculty Instructor for the Applied Drug Development MSc program and Auxiliary Instructor for the Psychoactive Pharmaceutical Investigation MSc program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. In addition to these roles, she is an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy where she teaches in the Pharmaceutics Department and mentors graduate students. Leslie received her BS in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Washington School of Pharmacy where her research focused on the structure-activity relationship of drug metabolizing enzymes. After two post-doctoral research positions, first at the Biomedical Research Centre at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Scotland and then at the University of Washington, she entered the pharmaceutical industry where she worked for 14 years as a DMPK scientist first at Amgen (Seattle, WA) and then at Genentech (South San Francisco, CA). While at Amgen, Leslie established a cell and molecular biology core facility that was responsible for creating assays that predict drug-drug interactions. She also served as a DMPK Project Lead on multiple immunology programs. While in the Genentech preclinical DMPK group, she functioned as the Therapeutic Area Lead for Ophthalmology and was responsible for the overall preclinical PK/PD strategy, staffing, and budgeting for the department’s ophthalmology portfolio. While at Genentech, Leslie transitioned to the clinical space and became the Clinical Pharmacology Lead for several programs across oncology (breast, ovarian, lung) and ophthalmology (retinal) and for multiple drug modalities including small molecules, monoclonal antibodies, and fusion proteins. Her group was responsible for delivering high-quality pharmacokinetic (PK) data, population PK modeling, and numerous clinical pharmacology investigations including drug-drug interaction, food effect, and organ impairment studies. Given her depth and breadth as both a preclinical and clinical DMPK scientist, Leslie is skilled in the ‘bench to bedside and back’ approach to scientific inquiry and is especially adept at the IND phase of transitioning molecules from preclinical to Phase 1. While working at Genentech, Leslie completed her MPH in Applied Epidemiology at Emory University which increased her breadth and depth as a clinical trialist. Her professional service currently includes serving on the Drug Discovery and Development Executive Board for the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and on the Editorial Board for the journal Clinical and Translational Sciences. She also peer reviews papers for the journals Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Drug Metabolism and Disposition, and Molecular Pharmacology.
