Professor

Professor Dr. Panna Thapa obtained BPharm (Hons.) and MPharm with First Class First from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He received his PhD degree in Formulation and Drug Delivery from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland in 2000, United Kingdom under ORS Award Scheme administered by Universities UK. He joined Department of Pharmacy, Kathmandu University (KU) as Lecturer in March 1994. He was promoted to Full Professor in August 2007. Prior to his appointment in the Department of Pharmacy he was a Technical Manager in the Vijayadeep Pharmaceuticals Private Limited in Kathmandu. Dr. Thapa is one of the founding members of the Department of Pharmacy. He was Visiting Scientist at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS), University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (2001 -2005), Scotland, UK. He has been a recipient of International Research Development Award (IRDA) from the Wellcome Trust, UK to establish a Formulation and Drug Delivery Research Lab and to conduct research in the area of Oral Controlled Release Drug Delivery in the Department of Pharmacy (2001-2004), KU. He has also received Education Award from Ministry of Education and Crown Prince Science and Technology Youth Award from Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) for his contribution in the Pharmacy Education and Drug Delivery & Formulation respectively. He was one of the Executive Board Members (2001-2006) and also Chairman of the Nepal Pharmacy council (2006-2010) nominated by the Government of Nepal. Dr. Thapa was the HOD in the Department of Pharmacy, KU (April 2006-October 2013). He was the Dean, KU School of Science (August 2007- June 2014). He was member of Technical committee of Quality assurance and accreditation (QAA), UGC Nepal (2013-July 2021). He has been appointed Controller of Examinations (COE) of Kathmandu University ( August 2013 to December 2022). He is Academic Advisor to Vice Chancellor, Kathmandu University since January 2023-Present. He is also Coordinator of Multidimensional Cannabis Research Centre (MCRC) at Kathmandu University since January 2022-Present. Vennue Foundation, USA awarded Professor Thapa GLOBAL PHARMACY CHAMPION AWARD 2019 in December 2019 for his contribution in Pharmacy practice and education. He is also member of American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) since 2000. He has considerable number of research publication including book chapter, reviews, conference papers etc during his academic career that can be accessed through Research gate web and google scholar etc. His research focus is on pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences (Formulation and Drug Delivery, pharmacy practice and education, regulatory sciences etc.). Professor Thapa (DOB: 19-Apr-1965) originally comes from Dolpa, Karnali Province, Nepal. Professor Thapa has also worked as Acting Registrar as per KU regulation from time to time in the absence of Registrar.
