Summary of Biodata – Prof (Dr) PK Gupta Introduction Prof (Dr) PK Gupta is an internationally renowned toxicologist and pioneer of modern toxicology in India, celebrated worldwide as a “teacher of teachers.” With over five decades of distinguished service in teaching, research, and global scientific leadership, he has profoundly influenced the development of toxicology as a discipline. Widely respected as both a visionary and mentor, he has authored more than 700 scientific publications, including over 20 books and numerous chapters published by globally recognized publishers such as Elsevier, Academic Press, John Wiley, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and CRC Press. His contributions have not only advanced science but also guided policies and standards in animal health and human safety. Education & Academic Achievements Dr. Gupta earned with distinction BVSc & AH, MVSc, and PhD degrees in Toxicology, pursued postdoctoral training in the United States, and was later awarded an Hon. DSc. He is a fellow of several prestigious academies and societies (FACVT, FAEB, FST, FASc AW, FNAVS). From the beginning of his career, his research demonstrated innovation and practical impact. Research Contributions His landmark discoveries include the identification of the higher toxicity of the alpha isomer of endosulfan, preparation of the first Indian Veterinary Pharmacopoeia to standardize drug use across the country, and development of a novel surgical technique to separate the urodeum and coprodeum in poultry, which opened a new avenue for studying the fate of chemicals in birds. He also carried out pioneering work on pesticide toxicology, pharmacokinetics of malathion, and the use of indigenous medicinal plants for therapeutic applications, including neem-based products for hyperglycemia and ectoparasitic diseases. Leadership Roles Over the span of his career, Dr. Gupta has held several leadership roles of national and international significance. He served as Principal Scientist and Chief of the Division of Pharmacology & Toxicology at IVRI (1980–2003); Scientist-in-Charge of Sponsored Toxicology Projects at ITRC, Lucknow (1973–1980); Advisor to the World Health Organization in Geneva (2003–2008); and as a faculty member at PGIMER Chandigarh and Punjab University. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Tennessee and West Virginia University in the USA. Recognized globally, he was unanimously elected Founder Director of the International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX), and went on to establish the Society of Toxicology (India) and the Academy of Sciences for Animal Welfare. He also founded the peer-reviewed international journal Toxicology International (formerly Indian Journal of Toxicology) and served as its Editor-in-Chief for more than two decades. Mentorship & Teaching A dedicated mentor, Prof. Gupta has guided and inspired generations of postgraduate and doctoral scholars, many of whom now occupy leading positions in academia, government, and industry. His teaching excellence has been honored with the prestigious ICAR Best Teacher Award, and his research innovations earned him the ICAR Best Researcher Award. Awards & Honors He is the only Indian recipient of the IUTOX–AstraZeneca Award (USA), an international recognition of his outstanding contribution to toxicology. His award tally includes more than 200 distinctions, including seven gold medals, the Alarsin Award, Lifetime Distinguished Scientist Awards, and several national and international honors. His exceptional career has been documented in more than four dozen biographical records such as Marquis Who’s Who (USA), IBC (UK), and the Book of Records in Toxicology. He is also recognized by the UP Book of Records (2018) and Limca Book of Records (2019). Global Engagements Beyond academia, Dr. Gupta has contributed his expertise as an advisor and consultant to several international organizations, including the World Health Organization (Geneva), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (Rome), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (Vienna). He also served as Book Review Editor for Marcel Dekker (USA) and has been associated with numerous scientific committees worldwide. Current Roles Today, Prof. Gupta continues to advance his lifelong mission as Director of the Toxicology Consulting Group and President of the Academy of Sciences for Animal Welfare. His pioneering vision, dedication to humane science, and global collaborations ensure that his legacy as a builder of institutions, mentor of scholars, and leader in toxicology remains an inspiration for generations to come.
