When walking a dog, it is common to see dogs wearing muzzles. Although muzzles are widely perceived as devices for human safety, they are increasingly being used on ordinary companion dogs to prevent ingestion of contaminated substances or food during walks, and for socialization training.
However, once a muzzle is placed, while people may feel reassured, the dog may experience discomfort. On hot days, a muzzle that prevents the dog from opening its mouth sufficiently can interfere with temperature regulation, requiring caution.
Pharmacist Kim Eun-a advises that when using a muzzle, owners should ensure the dog can breathe adequately and drink water, and monitor the skin for continuous contact issues.
