Korea’s Dementia Patients Projected to Surpass 1 Million, Emphasis Shifts to Early Detection

Dementia is no longer considered a problem that affects only others; it has become a pressing domestic issue in South Korea. This year, the number of dementia patients in the country is projected to exceed one million for the first time in history. The rapid aging of the population continues to drive the rise in cases, and the total patient count is expected to keep increasing. In response, the medical community’s perspective is shifting. Rather than concentrating solely on treatment after dementia onset, there is a growing emphasis on identifying early warning signals and implementing preventive measures before the disease fully develops. September 21 has been designated as “Dementia Overcoming Day,” a legal commemorative day aimed at raising awareness of dementia management and prevention. This year’s observance is especially significant as the nation approaches the milestone of one million dementia patients.
