The Ministry of Health and Welfare disclosed on the 1st that the national treasury support for South Korea's health insurance in 2027 will total 13.8 trillion KRW. The allocation consists of 11.8 trillion KRW for the general account and 2.0 trillion KRW for the health promotion fund, representing about 14.4% of the expected premium revenue.
The Health Insurance Labor Union issued a statement on the same day, arguing that when inflation and medical fee increase rates are taken into account, the government's contribution falls short of the legally stipulated 20% national support and effectively constitutes a reduction.
The announced amount is roughly 1 trillion KRW higher than the support level for 2026, but the union maintains that the increase does not keep pace with rising costs, criticizing the government's financing policy for the health insurance system.
