Management of Sore Throat and Fever: Differentiating Viral Infections from Group A Streptococcal Tonsillopharyngitis

Sore throat and fever are frequent symptoms of acute upper respiratory infections, including the common cold. In most cases, pharyngitis is associated with viral infections and resolves naturally, so symptomatic treatment is the primary approach. In contrast, acute tonsillopharyngitis caused by group A Streptococcus (GAS) can, although rarely, lead to suppurative complications such as peritonsillar abscess and non‑suppurative complications like rheumatic fever and acute glomerulonephritis. Therefore, appropriate evaluation and antibiotic therapy are necessary. This article reviews drug therapy for sore throat and fever, prescription considerations, and counseling points for patients.
