Brazilian federal university in Recife, Pernambuco, created in 1946 and federalised in 1965, with further campuses at Caruaru and Vitória de Santo Antão, one of the largest universities in the north east. Teaches pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, nursing, nutrition, biomedicine, chemistry and chemical engineering, runs the Hospital das Clínicas and the Laboratório Imunopatologia Keizo Asami research institute, and carries out research in drug development and natural products, biotechnology, biomaterials and clinical trials.
