My expertise is in the area of asymmetric catalysis, organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry and polymer synthesis. I have a H-Index of 30 (i10 = 101), over 3600 citations (GoogleScholar) (29 scopus and 3231 citations) and over 30 years of experience having carried out two postdoc stints (Oxford and ITQB-Oeiras) in two leading laboratories prior to obtaining my current independent position. In 2024 I was one of the top cited researchers at the faculty of pharmacy University of Coimbra. In 2012 I received my habilitation (agregation) in organic chemistry. I was a former vice-president of the Organic Chemistry Division of the Portuguese Chemical Society (SPQ) (2011-2013), the chair of all ISySyCat editions. I have served on a number of grant evaluation boards (Portugal, Poland, Cyprus, France, Italy), including for the EU (Pathfinder, EraNet etc), as well as being panel chair and part of a super panel in science & Engineering. I have been coordinator of the organic and organometallic synthesis section of the Evora Chemistry Centre, since its inception in 2002 till 2020 (when it became part of REQUIMTE). I have been the coordinator of projects with public funds/grants to the value of over 2.0€ million to date. I have supervised 9 PhDs (with 5 in progress) and 10 post-doc coworkers , including MSc and BSc students (aprox. 80) and have lectured more than 2500 students over my career. I have over 170 presentations that includes, publications (papers, book chapters, the book - Catalytic Arylation Methods, that was published in Jan 2015, with another Wiley-VCH book entitled Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients in Synthesis, Catalytic Processes in Research and Development, patents and talks). I am an author of a chapter in Enantioselective Organocatalysis III (Peter Dalko, Wiley). I was co-editor for the thematic issues of ChemCatChem and Molecules (http://www.mdpi.com/journal/molecules/special_issues/spiro.) I am currently an editor with Open Chemistry (De Gruyter), Chemistry Frontiers (Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry), Academia Organic and Biological Chemistry and have been a project evaluator of national and international projects over many years (reviewed aprox. 6 projects). In 2020, I was nominated a Chemistry Europe Fellow. I have given talks at many conferences and institutions, like the Nordic-Irish Process Chemistry Forum 2023, in Belfast (June 2023), "Highlighting Organic Chemistry in Portugal" (EuChemMS in 2023), the 15 National Meeting of Organic Chemistry (Faro 2024) and the 1st GroMoChem (Groningen, 2026). I have been a visiting professor at; the University of Lisbon-IST, University of Milan (Università degli Studi di Milano Statale), Boehringer Ingelheim (Ridgefield, Connecticut), Eurofins-VillaPharma (Murcia, Spain) and the University of Kyoto (department of Material chemistry). I have trained over 70 students (from post-docs to undergraduate students). Some have been contracted by public and private universities, others by prestigous industrial groups (Merck, EvoTec, SpiroChem, CrioEstaminal, ExoMatter, iplantprotect, Capgemini Engineering, Demera, Crysforma (Spain), Ascenza Agro, CENTI, etc), and others as Professors (University of Lisbon, University of Evora, Central Luzon State University, Jining Medical University, Rizhao, China, and University of Egas Moniz) and indepedent researchers (University of Evora, IST-UL, Universitat Politécnics de Catalunya, University of Aveiro). I have reviewed more than 130 articles in top-tier journals, including ACS Catalysis, Journal of Medicinal chemistry and Journal of Organic Chemistry and have been the handling editor for over 20 submitted manuscripts (for OpenChemistry, Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry and Chemistry Frontiers).
