David Allen Hunt was born and raised in Barboursville, WV. He received both the B.Sc. in chemistry (1973) and the M.Sc. [organic chemistry] (1975) from Marshall University. While at Marshall, he was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership and scholarship honorary) and Chi Beta Phi (science honorary). He then received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Duke University in 1979 under the direction of Professors William E. Parham and Charles K. Bradsher and was elected to membership into Phi Lambda Upsilon (chemistry honorary) and Sigma Xi (scientific research honorary). His dissertation work was directed toward the synthesis of carbocyclic and heterocyclic ring systems via annulation of thermolabile aryllithium intermediates generated at low temperature. Prior to joining The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), his industrial experience included stints at Union Carbide's Agricultural Research Division as a Senior Chemist in the Exploratory Process Research group, Becton Dickinson Research Center as a Senior Scientist in the Immunodiagnostics group, PPG Industries' Biochemical Division as a Senior Research Chemist focusing on novel herbicide design, Salsbury Laboratories as Technical Manager of Custom Synthesis R&D, American Cyanamid Agricultural Research Center as a Senior Group Leader for both the Insect Control Discovery Chemistry and Route Scouting groups, DSM/Catalytica Pharmaceuticals as a Senior Group Leader of pharmaceutical process R&D, and Albany Molecular Research (AMRI) as an Assistant Director of Chemistry, then Director of GMP Chemistry Services. While in industry, he also held concurrent adjunct/visiting faculty positions at Marshall University (graduate faculty: 1980-81), The College of New Jersey (1996-1999), Stevens Institute of Technology (1998), and East Carolina University (2000). He has served as a reviewer for the journals Tetrahedron, Organic Process Research and Development, Organic Preparations and Procedures International, Drug Discovery Today, European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Pesticide Science, The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, and he currently serves on the Board of Editors for the International Journal of Organic Chemistry and Advances in Chemical Sciences. He has served as a consultant for The Royal Botanical Gardens (Kew) in the United Kingdom and FMC Corporation's Agricultural Products Group, Discovery Chemistry Section. He has been invited to lecture at Queens’ College at Cambridge, The Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, and Temple University to name a just a few venues. He is author or co-author of 26 publications, six book chapters (invited), and is an inventor or co-inventor on more than 170 US and international patents. During his industrial career, he has either led or served on project teams responsible for the discovery and/or development of 15 compounds of commercial interest, three of which are now products including Phantom insecticide marketed by BASF Corporation; Velcade, an anticancer drug marketed by Millennium Pharmaceuticals which is used to treat patients suffering from multiple myeloma; and Seattle Genetics' Adcetris which treats relatively rare blood cancers -- Hodgkin's lymphoma and anaplastic large cell lymphoma. While at TCNJ, he has taught CHE 201 (General Chemistry I), CHE 331-332 (Organic Chemistry I-II), CHE 393-493 (Independent Study), and CHE 476 [Advanced Topics in Organic Chemistry - most recently Medicinal Chemistry (spring, 2006; spring, 2009; fall, 2014) and Heterocyclic Chemistry (spring, 2007; spring 2010). His research interests are wide-ranging and are primarily focused on the development of novel synthetic methods for the construction of heterocyclic ring systems of biological interest and medicinal chemistry studies. In addition to the academic honors listed above, he has been awarded Union Carbide Corporation’s Vice President’s Research Citation (1981) and was named a Distinguished Graduate Student Alumnus, College of Science, Marshall University (1994).
