This guanidine hydrochloride (CAS 50-01-1, molecular formula NH2C(=NH)NH2·HCl, MW 95.53) has a two-year shelf life at room temperature and is supplied in 25 kg drums or as requested. As a strong chaotropic agent, it is used in RNA isolation to dissociate nucleoproteins and inhibit RNase, and to denature and subsequently refold proteins, including solubilizing insoluble material such as inclusion bodies, often alongside urea and DTT.
