Prof. Clement Higginbotham is a principal investigator in the Materials Research Institute, which he founded in 2005, at Athlone Institute of Technology. His research interests lie within the Materials Research Institute (MRI) in the Faculty of Engineering & Informatics and the Bioscience Research Institute (BRI) in the Faculty of Science & Health, and include, the development of biomaterials, the development of polymers for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications, the development of medical device coatings, the development of nutraceutical delivery systems, hydrogel and smart material synthesis and characterisation, and organic synthesis. He has secured €6.5M to date in research funding from 46 grants, both national and international. He is a principal investigator in the Applied Polymer Technologies Enterprise Ireland Gateway (APT Ireland) where he secured €1.2M for its foundation. Prof. Higginbotham has supervised 31 PhD students and 7 MSc students to graduation, and has supervised and mentored 8 postdoctoral researchers, and 1 Marie Curie Fellow. He is currently supervising 6 PhD students and 2 MSc students. He has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed journal publications, books and book chapters. His h-index is currently 31 with more than 2700 citations. Prof. Higginbotham has numerous ongoing industrial and academic collaborations including projects with Medtronic-AVE, ClearStream Technologies, Alkermes, Abbotts, Transitions Optical, Mergon International, Creagh Medical, Synergy Health, Covidien/Mallinckrodt, Shabra on the industrial side and DCU, GMIT, WIT, TUD, UCD, NUIG, Trinity College Dublin, Harvard University (USA), Emden University (Germany), AO Research Institute (Switzerland), Dalhousie University (Canada), University of Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Swansea University (UK) and Southampton University (UK) on the academic side.
