Dr. Farzana (Khan) Perveen is a Gold Medalist and the Founder Chairperson and Associate Professor of the Department of Zoology at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University (SBBU). She has made significant contributions to the field of life sciences, earning international recognition for her work. Born in Karachi, she was awarded a cultural exchange scholarship to Nagoya University, Japan, where she spent 6.5 years. During this time, she completed a 6-month Japanese language course, a 2-year Master’s degree in Agricultural Sciences (Agronomy), and a Monbusho Fellowship at Nagoya University. She later earned her PhD in Zoology, specializing in Entomology, Integrated Pest Management, and Toxicology. In 2009, she was awarded an HEC Fellowship for a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
Dr. Perveen began her professional career as a research fellow at the University of Karachi. She also served as an associate and research fellow at the Laboratory of Applied Entomology at Nagoya University, Japan. After returning from Japan, she continued her work as a research fellow and lecturer at the University of Karachi. She holds the distinction of being the founding chairperson of the Department of Zoology at three national universities. Additionally, she has served as the Controller of Examinations at SBBU and as a visiting professor at Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad.
Early in her career, Dr. Perveen gained recognition for her extensive research on insecticides and azadirachtin, making significant contributions to a field often characterized by inconsistent research quality and redundant studies. She has also made notable contributions to parasitology. Some of her key publications include works numbered 112, 120, and 130. Most recently, she collaborated with a team of investigators to provide R&D support to EcoSMART Technologies Inc., helping the company become a global leader in essential oil-based and hormonal pesticides. Her expertise in developing pesticides from natural products has established her as an authority in the field. Her research on insects has led to fascinating discoveries related to insect feeding, egg-laying, memory, plant metabolism, and toxins.
As a research supervisor, Dr. Perveen has guided students across various fields of zoology, including entomology, toxicology, wildlife management, conservation biology, integrated pest management, parasitology, biochemistry, microbiology, agriculture, ornithology, genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, fisheries, and bioengineering. She is deeply committed to building the capacity of individuals and institutions in animal science education and research. Her expertise extends to natural resource development through applied conservation, ethno-zoology, and project formulation, implementation, and evaluation. Many of her projects have been approved by funding authorities and are currently ongoing.
Dr. Perveen has published numerous articles in local and international peer-reviewed journals with impact factors, including 16 with independent authors. She has also authored several book chapters and books, all published by renowned international publishers. She was awarded the Gold Medal for her PhD in Toxicology from the University of Karachi. Her research has been presented at international conferences and symposia in countries such as the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom, among others. She has received numerous shields and awards in recognition of her academic contributions.
She is a fellow of the Linnean Society of London, a life member of the Zoological Society of Pakistan, and a member of the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). She serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious international and national journals. Proficient in computers and modern languages, she has organized numerous international and national seminars, conferences, workshops, and symposia. She is also an HEC-approved supervisor for BS, MSc, MS, MPhil, and PhD students. She has been recognized as a Productive Scientist of Pakistan and has received the Research Productivity Award from 2010 to 2018.
