Sylvester Aghahowa (B.Pharm, MSc, MPhil, PhD, MNAS) Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology. His PhD research was in clinical metabolomics and has taught Pharmacology and Toxicology for over 20 years in different areas of medical specialty. These include the field of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing. Other programs are Paramedics, Post-Basic Specialty Nursing (Anesthesia, Trauma, Ophthalmology and Pediatrics) and other allied technician programs. These teaching and research activities are within the scope of undergraduate and post-graduate curricula in different institutions. In the scope of his training and research, he is a research visitor and a trainee to the following centres: Institute of Translational Medicine, (Drug Safety Unit) University of Liverpool, UK, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, (Malaria research Unit) UK, Imperial College (Metabolic Phenotyping unit) UK, University of Strathclyde (Metabolomic research unit) UK and Mayo Clinic (Metabolomic and Individualized Medicine units) Rochester, USA. He had awards and distinctions from local and international institutions which include but not limited to the Elsevier Award in recognition of his PhD research in the tackling one of the world’s greatest challenges identified by the United Nation Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) in 2022. Presently, he is collaborating with the Harvard School of Public Health, USA in the elimination of malaria globally. The scope of his research is in drug safety science, metabolomics and pharmacogenomics. He is presently carrying out research supervision to under-graduate and post-graduate students in areas of cancers, malaria, and science of Cytochrome P450 in frontiers of medical science. He has interest in drug discovery and development using metabolomics and pharmacogenomics expertise. He has also been involved in initiative through capacity building and policy support organized by the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Nigeria in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the area of Pharmacovigilance and adverse drug reaction research. Following his quest in the contribution to the world of science, he has published more than 60 research articles in reputable local and international peer-review journals. He is also a reviewer to many related medical journal and also the current chairperson of the ethics committee in research of the faculty of Pharmacy. Currently in a research team that is exploring natural products used in the management of COVID-19. Following his interest in research, teaching and capacity building, he desires to collaborate with researchers and institutions globally to strengthen the framework of drug safety and efficacy in therapeutics.
