German federal institute for risk assessment in Berlin, established in 2002 under the food and agriculture ministry to give independent scientific advice on the safety of food, feed, chemicals and consumer products. Carries out toxicological, exposure and epidemiological assessment of food contaminants, pesticide residues, food contact materials, cosmetics and chemicals, runs the national poison information reporting and the German centre for the protection of laboratory animals promoting alternatives to animal testing, and publishes opinions used by regulators and industry.
