British National Health Service hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, opened in 1906 on its present site with roots in an infirmary of 1751 and run by the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Provides emergency and major trauma care, the Great North Children's Hospital, maternity, ophthalmology, neurosciences and dentistry with regional specialist services, and runs its own laboratories and pharmacy while working with Newcastle University on teaching and on clinical trials through the National Institute for Health and Care Research clinical research facility.
