Study Finds Depression Impairs Hippocampal Neurogenesis Process

작성: PharmaCountry 팀

Research from Columbia University and NY State Psychiatric Institute shows that major depressive disorder blocks the transition of stem cells to new neurons in the hippocampus, linking depression to memory and emotional regulation changes.

A recent study indicates that depression may disrupt the brain's ability to generate new neurons. Researchers from Columbia University Department of Psychiatry and the New York State Psychiatric Institute analyzed postmortem hippocampal tissue from patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy control subjects. The analysis revealed that while neural stem cells are still present, their progression to mature neurons is impeded, suggesting a mechanistic link between depressive pathology and alterations in brain regions governing memory, learning, and emotional regulation.
