Bifisterol® is a probiotic food supplement developed to lower cholesterol. In vitro and in vivo screening of Bifidobacteria identified the strongest producers of bile salt hydrolase—B. lactis MB2409, B. bifidum MB109, and B. longum 04—and supplementing children with familial dyslipidemia with these three strains produced a significant reduction in total and LDL cholesterol, a notable result given the genetic, persistent nature of this population's cholesterol disorder.
