Piotr Ladyzynski received the MSc degree with major specialization in biomedical engineering from the Warsaw University of Technology in 1990. He started his professional career at the Nalecz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering Polish Academy of Sciences (IBBE PAS) in 1991, where he received the PhD (with distinctions) and DSc degrees in biomedical engineering in 1997 and 2009, respectively.
Prof. Piotr Ladyzynski’s research focuses on telemedicine, artificial internal organs, medical informatics, and biomeasurements. His work is dedicated to providing technical support for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases through modeling, ICT, biomeasurements, and hybrid methods that integrate technical solutions with tissue and cell culture. Notably, most of the systems developed by Prof. Ladyzynski have been successfully verified in pilot clinical trials.
A key area of his research is the application of these methods to diagnose, monitor, and treat diabetes and its complications. His major contributions in this field include:
1. Developing multiple telemedicine systems for home-based and mobile telecare.
2. Establishing methodologies for measuring glycated hemoglobin levels and using them to validate glycation models.
3. Creating and implementing a hybrid model to assess the impact of glucose on endothelial cell wellbeing.
Other achievements include the development and implementation of an automatic drug delivery system for vasodilators and vasoconstrictors and the application of artificial intelligence to predict treatment outcomes and personalize therapy for patients with chronic leukemia.
Prof. Ladyzynski collaborates with several national medical centers and international scientific institutions in Austria, Japan, and Colombia. From 2000 to 2001, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Nara Institute of Science and Technology (Japan), where he developed the first internet-based system for tele-screening diabetic retinopathy risk.
His scientific output includes over 120 publications, including 5 scientific monographs, 15 book chapters, and 62 peer-reviewed journal articles. Additionally, he co-authored four national patents and one utility model related to vasoactive drug delivery, insulin sensitivity measurement, remote diabetes treatment, and a hybrid blood vessel model. Prof. Ladyzynski has serving as either principal investigator or lead researcher in 15 research projects under MNiSW, NCN, NCBR, and PO IG programs.
He actively engages in academic teaching in Poland and abroad. Since 2019, he has lectured in annual summer schools at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogotá, Colombia) for biomedical engineering students from Latin America. He has supervised two completed doctoral theses.
From 2010 to 2014, he was Head of the Department of Biomedical Systems and Technologies at IBBE PAS. Since 2007, he has been a member of the institute’s board of directors, holding roles as Deputy Director for General Affairs, Science, and External Projects. Since 2022, he has been Director of IBBE PAS, while also serving as Director of the International Centre of Biocybernetics PAS since 2014.
He is a founding member of the Polish Society for Biomedical Engineering, where he has served on the Executive Committee. Since 2012, he has been a member of the Committee of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering PAS. Since 2010, he has been a member of the Scientific Council of IBBE PAS and served on the Scientific Council of the Institute of Medical Technology and Equipment in Zabrze (2017–2021). In 2020, he became a corresponding member of the Warsaw Scientific Society.
Prof. Ladyzynski is actively involved in international collaborations. Since 1997, he has been a member of the European Society for Artificial Organs, serving as a member of Board of Governors, Executive Committee, and President (2019–2021). Since 2008, he has been involved in the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), where he currently serves as Chair of the Industry Committee and a member of the IFMBE Administrative Council. In 2022, he was elected to the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering.
He has reviewed project proposals for the EC and national granting bodies, and evaluated doctoral theses from Poland, Canada, India and Spain. From 2016 to 2024, he was a member of the Medical Devices Commission at the office under by the Ministry of Health. He has also contributed to expert panels appointed by the Minister of Science, including serving as Chair of the Advisory Team for the Scientific Journal Ranking List and a member of the Advisory Team for the "Development of Scientific Journals" program.
From 2017 to 2022, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering (Elsevier). Since 2024, he has been an Editor for the Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences – Technical Sciences. He has also reviewed articles for 44 JCR-listed journals.
