Ute Morgenstern, born in Dresden in 1956, is a German biomedical engineer who worked in teaching and research at Technische Universität Dresden until her retirement in 2020. She studied Technical Cybernetics and Biomedical Engineering at TH Ilmenau (Dipl.-Ing., 1980), earned her doctorate in 1986 on modeling human ventilation mechanics, and obtained her Venia legendi in 1991/92. From 1992 on, she served as assistant professor at TU Dresden’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering, where she taught some fields of biomedical engineering: biomedical modeling and simulation, pacemaker technology, respiratory physiology and mechanical ventilation, and medical imaging. She led research groups, mainly in intraoperative optical and hyperspectral imaging in neurosurgery, in cooperation with clinical and industrial partners. Since 2004 she had also been vice director of the institute. Morgenstern has published widely, supervised numerous theses, and has been active in the German Society for Biomedical Engineering (DGBMT), education initiatives, and expert committees. Together with colleagues, she co-edits the twelve-volume textbook series Biomedizinische Technik, launched by De Gruyter in 2014 and now being published as open access edition by Berlin Universities Publishing.
